My Top Songs From 2008

In no particular order here are a few of my favorite songs from 2008: Remember that I am no critic, I don’t get to post all the music that I like, I like what I like, I move to what I move to, and moved by what I am moved by. I don’t claim expertise, I claim me. My memories. My experiences. My filters.

mp3: “White Winter Hymnal” – Fleet Foxes
Fleet Foxes
It’s the vocals….and the involuntary foot taps.

mp3: “In The New Year”‘ – The Walkmen
You & Me
I didn’t love this song at first, but damn it, it grew on me….and stuck!

mp3: “Josephine Street” – I Love Math
Getting to the Point Is Beside It
I think it’s the poppy handclapiness that won me over. But win me over it did.

mp3: “Sore” – Annuals
Wet Zoo EP
Instantly this one wound its way around my heart. I am not even sure I follow the lyrics correctly, but I am crushed and moved every time I hear it.

mp3: “HYPNTZ” – Dan Black
Dan Black-MySpace
Makes me stop what I’m doing for a moment to listen…and then move.

mp3: “Inside the Cinema” – Culture Reject
Culture Reject
Hand clapping doesn’t always work for me, but it does here. Looking back at this list…maybe hand claps work better than I thought!

mp3: “I Lied” – Orillia Opry
Orillia Opry-MySpace
It took a while for this song to catch me…but once it did, I couldn’t get rid of it. I woke up for weeks with this song on repeat in my head. Which might normally be a bad thing, but it wasn’t.

mp3: “Into the Ground” – The Brakes
Tale of Two Cities
“Touch me baby, just like you used to…”

mp3: “Walk Through a Cloud” – The Donkeys
Living on the Other Side
Reminds me of the weekend at the cabin with my friends last August. It was definitely on repeat that week.

mp3: “How Everything Works” – Made in China
Made in China–iTunes
Sometimes everything fits. A song, the lyrics, the mood. This is one of those times. I played this over and over again in recent months. I can’t find much about the artists, but I did find the album and song on iTunes.

mp3: “Easy” -Lex Land
Orange Days on Lemon Street
“Make it easy on me…” Um, Lex Land has become a personal favorite over the past year.

mp3: “Another World” – Antony and the Johnsons
Another World
I haven’t posted this song yet. It feels too personal. Too raw. Too close to home. It took some time for Antony and the Johnsons to grow on me. I don’t love everything, but some songs cut me up.

mp3: “Swimming” – Shelley Short
Water for the Day
I posted this song, newly heard, along with some dragonfly pictures from flickr. I see dragonflies now every time I hear it.

mp3: “SK Final” – Ndidi Onukwulu
The Contradictor
So close to home. Strength that I sometimes claim, but really don’t have.

mp3: “Year of the Dog” – The Lovely Sparrows
Bury the Cynics
It had me at hello. Then it got better. I can’t explain why. It would go something like “here. And this. Listen here. Are those flutes? Oh, the hand claps.” All of which means nothing, but….I like it.

mp3: “Swimming Pools” – Thao
We Brave Bee Stings and All
We don’t dive, we cannonball” are the lyrics that captured my imagination. Freedom from inhibitions is what I hear.

mp3: “Only as the Day is Long” – Sera Cahoone
Only as the Day Is Long
I posted this song near the time Starr and Skye went to Gulf Port on their mission trip. I am taken there every time I hear it.

mp3: “Bang On” -The Breeders
Mountain Battles
It’s the beat. Raw and earthy.

mp3: “Shake Shake Shake” – White Denim
Workout Holiday
Just ’cause I want to “Shake Shake Shake” when I hear it.

“Dropped” – Phantom Planet *I picked a different video for this song, but it disappeared. : (*
Raise The Dead
I had this song on repeat for several weeks this summer. And as I quoted in my original post from Alan Williamson at Sixeyes:

“Dropped” is the kind of song that makes me want to jump up and down and yell and shout, maybe it even makes me feel young again (and it has made me jump up and down, just ask my neighbours), whatever it’s doing, and has done, it sure feels good and (added bonus) I don’t feel cheap and used afterwards.

And it is…does.
