Stop Freaking Out

Last night I had an ocular migraine. I don’t get them often, maybe 2 to 3 times a year. It’s not painful, but it is unsettling. What I see is similar to the painting below, but the circle was closer to being complete and it was more colorful/prismatic.

I was trying to tell Starr what I was seeing and how it was frustrating me when she interrupted me and said “stop freaking out”…I wasn’t freaking out, I was talking!! Rude. Okay, maybe I was going on about it, but–dude!–I couldn’t see normally!!

*At some point this morning, I had a decent transition/connection planned for these two things, but I lost it! : ) Oh well.*

Now. This morning, Starr woke up with a swollen puffy face. It looks like fluid retention. We’ve both experienced similar before, but it has been happening more and more often lately and she is not happy. Today was the worst it’s been so far, her cheeks, eyes and lips were all puffy. She did not look like herself, she looked sick. Our morning consisted of ice packs, whining and Googling. She has been drinking water, her diet hasn’t changed, she hasn’t been sick. She has increased her workouts.

She asked me to post the problem to the blog (no pictures were allowed!) and see if anyone has any ideas or help for her.

We will keep an eye on it and if it continues I will make sure that she goes to the doctor.

  1. I had this problem off and on for about a year (over ten years ago). All of the sudden my eye would puff up, or I would wake up in the morning and my lips would be double their size! Unfortunately I never found out what was causing it, but fortunately it stopped happening. I always thought it was something I was allergic to, but never figured out what it was. Sorry… I’m no help. Hope Starr gets some relief.

And I hope you got rid of your migraine. But that picture is waaaaay cool! Where did you find it?

  2. I wonder if it’s some kind of allergic reaction!

    • It might be, we will try some allergy meds and see if it makes a difference.

  3. glad your migraine went aways…

    and sorry about starr..
my sister will have the same thing happen to her if she doesn’t consistantly take zyrtec EVERY DAY.. it’s really weird though.. cause no doc has ever found the exact reason it happens but for some reason zyrtec controls it…

who knows.. i’m with them, sorry i’m not much help.. hope ya’ll get it figured out.

    • She will try this! Anything is better than a swollen face and not feeling like yourself!

  4. Kelly,

I have had ocular migraines before and I’ve never heard of any one else who did! Maybe it’s hereditary.

On Star’s problem I was thinking of allergies too. There may be some sort of tree or plant in bloom that is triggering her symptoms.

    • I wonder if it is hereditary. I guess ocular migraines are a relatively benign thing to share…it could be worse!! I don’t think mom ever had them. I had another one yesterday, so two days in a row. : (

I am going to pick up some allergy meds for Starr and see if it helps.

  5. Kelly, as the mom of a nineteen-year-old I know I would be dying to say, “Don’t freak out!” to your Ms. Starr, if I were you! :) But when it’s YOUR body, it IS kind of freaky the things that can happen. Anyone who hasn’t experienced a migraine “trip” with flashing lights and spermatazoa swimming across your line of vision has no idea. Your ocular experience is one I’ve never had and I’m SO glad it wasn’t painful. You’ve had ENOUGH of that.

As for Starr is seems so strange that it only happens after sleeping which would make me look at her environment closely. Sheets, blankets, pets, plants, even a spider or insect bite that could recur. Definitely would be worth some allergy testing, I’m thinkin’.
