Yum!

Because I am a kid at heart, I had a little fun with the dry ice that kept that pie frozen quite solid during it’s trip to Colorado. I took a video with my phone…don’t look at my kitchen, it is usually clean *seriously…immaculate!* and that gold vinyl floor?! I am not sure where that came from because last time I looked, we had hardwood…yeah.

A bit of rambling to end the week:

I have still been struggling with this cold/sinus infection/mystery illness. Coughing, sneezing, blowing…running a fairly consistent low grade fever. I started my third round of antibiotics earlier this week and am keeping my fingers crossed. This is becoming ridiculous!! It’s been nearly two months. I don’t think I’ve ever been sick for this long before, I hope I never experience it again.

Starr has been home on and off this week as she has been feeling run down, head-achy and she is running a fever too. Although she hasn’t developed any more symptoms to work with. No cough or sore throat. I think she is feeling better today. I hope so!!

My blog reader tells me that there are 668 posts that are currently unread. I will be skimming. A lot!

A person who was an authority figure in Starr’s high school was arrested this week for inappropriate sexual contact with children. It is a sad sad thing, shaking the community soundly. It’s so disheartening when you learn about an adult taking advantage of children. This is the first time that it involves someone we were connected with. We hope that it’s the last time. Hugs to those involved and their families!

Today is Starr’s little sister, Sissy’s, birthday. Big 15! It is also the birthday of DJT’s daughter. Two years ago she suffered a life threatening brain injury after a fall. As she celebrates her 20th birthday, I send her warm thoughts for continued healing. It is such a long journey.

Happy birthday girls!! I love you both. Very much!

I have been really absent lately, I’ve been under the weather. My cold has morphed into bronchitis and hasn’t been much fun. Blech. So this post is a little this-and-that.

Starr is home for the holiday break…although she decided to go out of town right away to visit some of her nearby high school–now college–friends who are still in classes through Tuesday, so I haven’t really seen much of her. Less than normal really. Which is good in many ways.

She has decided to quit her job at the Aveda salon, which she loved, but the commute…via me…wasn’t working and she was disengaging from her sorority experience and from college. She will now be able to work more hours at her professor’s assistant job and be more involved with school. Hopefully her grades will improve! The side effect of this is that she won’t need me to drive her back and forth anymore. Good for more reasons than are obvious and sad because I will miss her!

“No worries!” She says. “I will still have laundry on the weekends for you!”

Um, yeah, about that…..I have already started saving quarters for her! I just know that they have laundry facilities in the sorority house!

She received good news last week in that she was named Philanthropy Chair for her sorority. She is both excited and nervous about this. It is the position she wanted, but she doesn’t want to mess it up! I am sure that she will do a great job, as long as there is no laundry involved!

We have planned our Thanksgiving menu, which is the same as always. Starr is resistant to new dishes and has her favorites that she will not give up! Sometimes I wonder how her future husband and family will fit into her idea of how things work!? I think they will just have to conform!

We will be having: Grandmother and Mammaw’s chicken n’ cornbread dressing, homemade yeast rolls, mashed potatoes, Starr’s favorite Gulliver’s corn, Mammaw’s candied sweet potatoes (which are all mine, Starr won’t eat them!) apple pie and ice cream. Since it is just the two of us usually, we get to do what we want! It’s a carb-o-licious feast!

We wish that we lived closer to family, so that we could share the day with them, but we also enjoy spending the day together. Old movies, cooking, food, playing card and/or board games…a day to take a true break from “life” and just be…together.

I am thankful to have a daughter who loves me completely, who gets me, and who loves spending time with me. Thankful to have a good relationship with my brother who I love dearly, and to be Aunt to the most amazing 8 year old EVER! I am thankful for Starr’s siblings and their love. I am thankful for DJT and his friendship…I really don’t know what I would have done without it lately. My parents, for their patience and for everything that they have ever done for me.

I pray for Sunny and her family, during these emotional holidays, as well as each and every day. I send them my love and wish for continued healing. I know they miss her terribly. Which is a gross understatement, words are truly inadequate.

I am thankful to have been Sunny’s friend, to have known her, loved her and been loved by her.

We miss you! …understatement…

Twice in the past week a mouse has darted across my path in the garage. The first time I almost convinced myself that it was just my imagination, just a blur of motion caused by the boxes that I had just picked up and was swinging around to move them to a new location. I almost forgot about it.

Until yesterday. Starr and I were headed out to run some errands and as I opened the door to the garage, I saw another blur of motion headed towards the wall disappearing behind the refrigerator. Damn. He was too fast to see clearly, but twice is enough to convince me. We added another stop to the list and bought some traps…and a new garbage can. Ours was nearly eight years old and the bottom had holes in it from dragging it to the curb every week. Although, if I remove the access to the garbage in the garage, will he be more tempted to come in the house? Are they already inside?

Reminded me of these pictures I found a few weeks ago while sorting slides: 1978 on the “farm” in Minnesota. Thirteen years old, and the field mouse was adorable! They are not so cute when invading my home!

Also reminds me of the apartment DJT and I rented when the girls were young, with a huge mouse problem! Not to mention the mosquitos and the snakes!! Oh my goodness, the snakes! I can laugh about it now. Thankfully, I don’t have snakes here…as far as I know! *shudder*

This is the post that I was planning on putting together earlier today…before life and emotions got in the way.

It has been many years…thirteen or so? (that doesn’t seem possible!) since DJT and I last talked. Many things have changed in our lives since then, many things remain the same. One big change for us…our little girls, who were the same age, have both had time to grow up into beautiful young women.

It has been a blessing to be able to reestablish a connection recently.

Sadly, it was tragic events in both of our daughters’ lives last year that ultimately brought us together again. It is a good thing, born of tragedy.

There are some people in your life that you should always remain connected to and DJT is one of mine. I have missed having his friendship. In the aftermath of our life altering events, it has been helpful to me to have someone that I trust so completely in my circle.

DJT told me the other day that he was looking through his old pictures…sorting, and reliving some memories. He said that he hadn’t found any from our time together. So I went through my photo files too and unfortunately, I don’t seem to have many either. I think I was as allergic to having my picture taken then as I am now. For some reason, I have very few pictures of the girls together…why? I am an idiot, that’s why!

Here are a couple that may bring back some memories:

DJT and Starr, 1991

Starr having a moment…so sweet.

I could be wrong, but I have it in my head that DJT took this picture while I was using the facilities…she missed me!

DJT and the girls at a fall festival, 1992

It was a good day!

I do have video of the girls and I am actively working on getting it transferred to DVD for you! Soon!
