Last year I couldn’t make myself send out our usual holiday cards. I wasn’t in the mood. It was hard to pretend that the holiday was anything other than something to suffer through in light of our year. I did write a short note that I emailed to those people on my card list who I had email addresses for and I attempted my first digital scrapbooking project that I sent along with the letter.

I am in very much the same emotional hole this year as I was last year. However, Starr thinks that we need to send out cards. She says that I need to stop moping around and participate in life. “We don’t want people to think we don’t care about them.” She even bought cards for us to send, because she knew I wouldn’t do it myself. So we will do it.

Today I need to compile my recipient list, address envelopes and write a short letter. However what I am doing instead is browsing blogs…being oh so productive as I avoid the task. As usual.

It’s been another emotional and busy week for us. There were some highlights, like unexpected (and pleasant!) visits from out-of-town relatives, and meeting new people. Instead of recapping and whining about the rest, I have decided to randomly post one of my favorite songs by The Decemberists:

Starr, Skye and Rocket went to the drive-in theater tonight so I was spending a little time recovering from Rockets obsession with WWE (wow, I really don’t get that stuff!) and started clicking around on YouTube. It started with a search for XTC and ended up here:

I have always loved Cary Grant too…but I don’t have the time or energy to do the minimum around here (Starr relished pointing out the near dust bunnies on the dining room table today…thank you very much! Am I the only one in this house allowed to touch a duster?? I worked so hard cleaning downstairs and washing sheets this week, I gave up on the upstairs. Funny thing is, Rocket wants to sleep on the sofa in the living room. I don’t think he even looked at the stairs…throw him Starr’s dirty pillow and blanket and he’s happy. Who knew?)…let alone make awesome videos like this.

Beautiful and timeless.

I heard Nick Drake on the radio this morning, and was surprised to learn that he died nearly 34 years ago. Did I know that already? I had it in my mind that he was currently making music. Wow, I really haven’t been paying attention, but the realization made me appreciate what I already loved even more. It also made me want to put a little more effort into finding and listening to more of his work.

Starr’s tattoo was well received by her friends, coworkers and even her dad. She is still happy with it, and because of the meaning behind the symbol, there have been several friends and family members who have expressed a desire to get Sunny’s Heart tattoos for themselves.

Including me.

One of my daily visited music blogs, Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands, has a recurring feature where he posts YouTube videos of people doing covers of some of his favorite songs. Today he posted several videos of people covering “Do You Realize??” by The Flaming Lips. This song has been a favorite of mine for years, but I haven’t heard it in a while. As I was listening to the first video posted today, my first thought was “I like this idea”, my second thought as I started to get emotional was “I love this song, and it is so appropriate for the way I’ve been feeling lately.” I needed that today.

A reminder that we need to live life and love.
